About Detox

An organic herbal blend, made for daily ritual.

Two of the classic spring-tonic herbs of European and North American folk tradition: burdock root and nettle leaf. For centuries, springtime herbalists reached for these roots and leaves as the season turned, and they have held a long place in Western herbalism. This blend pairs them with peppermint for cooling freshness, licorice root for natural sweetness, and ginger root for its warm, lively spice. The cup tastes surprisingly sweet before anything is added, earthy without being bitter, minty without being medicinal.

Why no senna or cascara.

Many of the teas sold under this name lean on harsh botanicals like senna leaf or cascara bark. This blend skips that route entirely. Instead it leans on burdock and nettle, the mineral-rich spring-tonic herbs of Western tradition, with licorice to harmonize the blend and round the earthiness, and ginger to add warmth. The result is a tea built for a daily cup, not a quick fix.

How to enjoy it.

Morning or night, as a daily ritual. Because it contains no caffeine, the tea fits any hour. Many customers brew it first thing in the morning as a clean-start ritual. Others pour a cup after a heavy meal to round out the evening. Steep 1.5 teaspoons in 8 ounces of full-boil water for 6 minutes. The licorice root sweetness builds with time. Blended in our Salem, Oregon kitchen.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Cool peppermint up front, then a warm, sweet wave of licorice and ginger. The burdock and nettle sit underneath as an earthy base.

Flavor: Surprisingly sweet. The licorice root coats the palate with a natural sweetness that reads almost like honey, balanced by the clean, cooling peppermint. The ginger adds a gentle warmth through the middle.

Finish: A soft ginger heat that lingers. The mint cools, the licorice sweetens, the burdock and nettle ground the cup with a mild earthiness.

Why You'll Love It

Burdock root, the spring-tonic root: Arctium lappa has been enjoyed in European and Japanese herbalism for centuries as a classic spring-tonic root. In Western herbalism it is known as an "alterative," a traditional category of gently supportive herbs. The root is mineral-rich, containing inulin, iron, and other trace minerals. Eclectic herbalists in 19th-century America kept burdock in their materia medica.

Nettle leaf, the mineral source: Urtica dioica is one of the most mineral-dense herbs in the Western materia medica, with high levels of calcium, magnesium, iron, and silica. Nettle has been enjoyed as a spring tonic in European folk tradition for over a thousand years. Like burdock, it is one of the traditional "alterative" herbs.

Licorice root, the harmonizer: Glycyrrhiza glabra is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a "guiding herb" that harmonizes a formula. The root is naturally 50 times sweeter than sugar, which is why the cup tastes sweet without added honey.

A note on safety: This tea is designed for daily use and contains no laxatives. If you are pregnant or nursing, or have high blood pressure or a heart or kidney condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before using licorice root regularly, as prolonged use of licorice in high doses can affect potassium levels and blood pressure.

A few notes from our teamakers.

Iced Roots with Lemon
Cold-brew 2 teaspoons in 16 ounces of cold water for 8 hours in the fridge. Strain. Pour over ice with a squeeze of fresh lemon and a sprig of fresh mint. The lemon brightens the earthy burdock and nettle, the mint doubles the cooling effect. Drinks like a spa water.

Hot Post-Meal Cup
Brew 1.5 teaspoons in 8 ounces of full-boil water for 6 minutes. Drink it hot about 20 minutes after a heavy meal. Peppermint and ginger have a long tradition as after-dinner herbs. A cozy after-dinner ritual.

Morning Reset Ritual
Brew 1.5 teaspoons first thing in the morning, before breakfast. Sip it slowly while still hot. The earthy, minty cup makes a grounding start to the day, and the caffeine-free profile keeps it gentle. Many customers pair this with a quiet 10 minutes before the day begins.

Your Questions About Detox, Answered.

Does this tea have laxative effects?

No. This blend contains no anthraquinone-based laxatives like senna or cascara, which force a bowel movement and can be habit-forming with long-term use. Burdock and nettle are the classic spring-tonic herbs of Western herbalism. This tea is designed for a gentle daily cup, not a quick fix.

Why does it taste sweet without added sugar?

The licorice root is naturally 50 times sweeter than sugar, due to a compound called glycyrrhizin. The sweetness is not from added sugar or artificial sweeteners. Licorice has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and European herbalism for thousands of years as a "harmonizing" herb that balances formulas and makes bitter or earthy herbs more palatable.

What does detox mean in this context?

It is a name carried over from the tea tradition rather than a promise. Burdock and nettle are the classic spring-tonic herbs of European and North American folk tradition, the roots and leaves that herbalists have reached for as the season turns. This blend leans on those mineral-rich botanicals, sweetened by licorice and cooled by mint. It is not a medical claim or a promise to treat anything.
